Pancakes

At Elmfield Farm Dairies, we believe in tradition and local dairy. That’s why we are always excited for Pancake Day, a UK staple that is all about the dairy. Whether that’s the milk you use to mix it all together or the whipped cream or butter on top, pancakes are a deliciously simple dish and one where you are able to notice the purer and cleaner taste of local and independent dairy.

The history of pancakes in the UK dates back centuries, and the dish has evolved over time to become a beloved staple of British cuisine. Pancakes were originally made with wheat flour, eggs, and milk, which were mixed together to form a batter. The batter was then cooked on a griddle or in a frying pan, resulting in a thin, flat cake that was often served with sugar or honey.

In the Middle Ages, pancakes were a popular food during the period of Shrovetide, which was the time leading up to Lent. During this time, people would use up any rich foods they had in their homes before the Lenten fast began, and pancakes became associated with this tradition.

Over time, the recipe for pancakes has evolved, with new ingredients and flavourings being added to the batter. Today, pancakes are often served with a variety of toppings, including fruit, chocolate, and whipped cream. They are a popular breakfast and brunch item in the UK, and are often enjoyed on Pancake Day, which is celebrated on the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday.

Pancake Day, also known as Shrove Tuesday, is still celebrated in the UK today. It is a time for people to indulge in pancakes and other rich foods before the start of Lent. Pancake races are also a popular tradition on this day, with people running while flipping pancakes in a pan.

Overall, the history of pancakes in the UK is rich and varied, with the dish evolving over time to become a beloved part of British cuisine and culture. Pancake Day in general has become a treasured tradition and one that is best enjoyed with local dairy ingredients so you can experience a cleaner and healthier taste.
